Nowadays , it's a trending word.
Specially after facebook changed its name to META. Meta is popularised everywhere.
Let's see what Mark Zuckerberg has said about Metaverse;
"You are gonna be able to almost anything you can imagine. Get together with family and friends , work , learn , play , shop , create as well as entirely new categories that don't really fit how we think about computers and phones today"
The next platform and medium will be even more immersive an embodied internet where you are in the experience , not just looking at it. We call this Metaverse. Future is going to be beyond anything we can imagine right now.
It is said that it will replace the internet and will change the human life. It will be the next evolution of the internet.

Which basically means 'Beyond the Universe' or 'Artificially created universe'.
The word is derived from Greek.
With the word Metaverse there is another word is also trending called 'MULTIVERSE'. It refers to multiple existing universe that's why MULTIVERSE.
But here , let's be back to talk about Metaverse:
Internet has its own world but it is limited to 2-D only most of the time. Whereas , Metaverse is a 3-D concept.
Just think that you are watching Geographic channel. You aren't only watching it in 2-D but by using VIRTUAL REALITY(VR) you are watching in 3-D. It feels like you are present there in reality , which isn't fact of course. It just give you the experience of reality.
FICTION
Metaverse coined by Neal Stephenson in his science fiction novel 'Snow Crash' in 1992.
In this novel , Humans are represented by computers generated 'AVATARS' , interacts with each other & software agent in 3-D virtual space that uses the metaphor of the real world.
Metaverse is visualized as a sight of the internet that is an universal and immersive virtual world , facilitated by the use of Virtual Reality(VR) and Augmented Reality(AR) headsets.
Definition of Metaverse by Matthew Ball in his book 'The Metaverse: And how it will revolutionize everything' is ,
"A massively scaled and interoperable network of real time rendered 3-D virtual world that can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of all users with an individual sense of presence & with continuity of data , such as identity , history , entitlements , objects , communications and payments."
Some tech giants are building Metaverse like experience , such as virtual fashion shows , live concerts & workspaces.

1) VIRTUAL REALITY(VR):
This technology exists today. To use this you have to wear heavy headsets.
2) AUGMENTED REALITY(AR):
Some artificial elements mixed with our real world. Everything would not be VR as well as AR.
Examples are pokemon go smartphone games and google glass. However , Google Glass was not a successful product by Google as it was not accepted by the consumers.
Google Glass was introduced to the world in 2012.
IMPLEMENTATIONS:
The 2003 virtual world game by 'second life' is described as the Metaverse.
It is a platform that allows people to create an avatar for themselves and interact with other users.
Metaverse include Habbo Hotel , world of warcraft , Minecraft , Fortnite , VRchat & game creation platform Roblox. These are said to be examples of Metaverse as they provide 3-D virtual environments and user created content.
Interview with wired second life creator Philip Rosedale described the metaverse as a three dimensional internet that is popularised with live people.
Facebook changed its name to Meta bcoz , they wanted to expand from being Social Media Company to a Metaverse Company. Rebranded the company to build METAVERSE.
But there are still many questions about the existence of the metaverse like ,
Is METAVERSE going to be successful? OR Does anyone want it?
Do we want to live in the world where mankind is limited to digital screens only?
